about my name is kim sam soon
Kim Sam Soon (Kim Sun Ah) is a baker who has a talent in making pastries and cakes. On Christmas Eve, she caught her boyfriend, Min Hyun Woo (Lee Kyu Han), cheating on her and breaks up on the same night. On that same night, she accidentally went into the men's restroom and met Hyun Jin Hun (Hyun Bin), a somewhat callous fellow but sometimes considerate guy. By sheer coincidence, Jin Hun needs a baker for his restaurant Bon Appetit and Sam Soon is unemployed. Sam Soon is hired as the restaurant's chief baker and the two fights like cat and dog. Nevertheless, they started to have feeling for each other and Sam Soon agreed to post as Jin Hun's girlfriend so his mother would leave him alone. Things got complicated when Jin Hun's ex-girlfriend Yoo Hee Jin came back from the States intending to win him back. Source: DramaWiki The story revolves around a 29 to 30 year old girl called Kim Sam-Soon, single and overweight, who is the third daughter of a rice cake maker owner. She doesn't have a college degree although she is a patissier with a Le Cordon Bleu certification. Her main passion and skills are in baking, as she does not have much of a social life, dreams of changing her name (Sam-Soon is considered a very old-fashioned and embarrassing name) and owning a shop of her own. After her breakup with her boyfriend, she managed to land herself in a big French restaurant working as a patiesseur for a rude and angsty 27-year-old man called Hyun Jin-Heon. Both were in bad terms ever since they set eyes on each other. But one day, Sam-Soon finds herself in need of 50 million won (Korean currency, approximately $50,000) to pay for her mother's house. She agrees to be Hyun Jin-Heon's girlfriend for that amount. During their pretend dating they slowly become more affectionate with each other. When things seem to go accordingly, Hyun Jin-Heon's ex-girlfriend, Yoo Hee-Jin, enters the scene and life for Sam-Soon starts getting much worse. Jin-heon then realizes that he is happier with Sam-Soon and can't stop thinking about her. He confesses his love to her after she tells him that she hates people who don't confess their feelings towards the person they like. Hee-Jin asks Jin-Heon to accompany her on her return to the United States. Sam-Soon allows him to go, and he does not return within the promised duration. He soon arrives, and they find out that he has been sending postcards to the wrong address. Sam-Soon and Jin-Heon attempt to get pregnant, in order to convince Jin-Heon's mother into allowing their marriage. The plan fails, but they remain together. Near the very end of the series, Sam-Soon reads a poem from a poster on a bus stop: "Dance like no one's watching. Sing like no one's listening. Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt before. Live like there's no tomorrow." Source: Wikipedia
why sam soon and sam shik
What I especially love about this pairing is the realistic aspect. You don't get the happily or unhappily ever afters that are in abundance in other dramas. You get the raw ending, the what more realistic, everything isn't really a happily ever after kind of ending. There's romance, there's problems, and there's family. There are lots of factors that go into a relationship. Sam Soon/Sam Shik doesn't shy away from that. They pretty much build their storyline around that. Take Sam Soon's character, sure she's overweight (pretty normal - American standard), but regardless she's obsessed with her weight, who isn't?! Then there's Sam Shik who loves her regardless. He's no perfect prince charming either. He's spoiled and definitely has a unique set of values. Looking at them at face value doesn't make sense, but looking beyond their outer exterior, lies a couple that works. With all their flaws and misconceptions, they just work. That between all their attempts at trying to pretend to be a couple or pretending not to be a couple, they fell in love. That's what makes the fairy tale aspect so endearing. That while not looking for a romance it hit them smack in the face. If you have yet to see this pairing, which is probably unlikely since you're here, you have to watch it. Then maybe this messed up attempt to summarize their relationship will make sense. ;)
